At 9 years old, Jacob is becoming a real pro fishing Rim Shoals & Dry Run Creek.  He made his first trip to Rim Shoals Resort at the age of 7 and was hooked!  According to his dad, Rob, Jacob was much easier to convince about fishing this area than his mom.  It only took Rob 15 years to get Jacob's mom, Debbie, to come along on a weekend fishing trip with her boys.  Rob may be in danger... Debbie said she would like to come back?!?11/09

Jacob landed 20-plus fish this past Saturday fishing Rim Shoals.  He was using a #10 white woolly, silver bead head with no hackle.  Then on Sunday, they all went to Dry Run Creek.  As his dad said about fishing Dry Run - "no words for that."

Maybe we could get Jacob to share his techniques with us next time he comes to Rim.

Way to go Jacob!!!11/09

Jeff Meyers shows off a couple of his rainbows he caught at  Bull Shoals Dam recently.  He said the fishing was terrific as always!!  He & his fishing buddies get together at Rim Shoals Resort for their annual "Man Camp" every year.  However, this year this church group was able to steal away another long weekend for one more "Man Camp" before the holiday season is in full swing.  The water was perfect for their drift boat fishing.  This group simply enjoys fishing the White River. 11/09

Nice Catch!!

This beauty was caught by Dirk Sutterfield from Greenbrier, Arkansas over the past weekend.  Fishing the lower island of the Rim Shoals Catch & Release, Dirk caught & released the 6lbs - 26" brown using a Colorado spoon.  Let's hope his fishing buddies were better at weighing & measuring than taking his picture??10/09

Sometimes it's not all about fishing.... Erik Alford was quick to snap the photo when this squirrel fell from a tree limb hanging over the river.  The squirrel had no choice but make his way to shore.  Good thing that big brown lurking beneath the surface didn't see him???10/09

This guy has been a long-time guest at Rim Shoals  Resort. Coming here since early childhood, Jonathan Willard has fished just about every part of the White River.

This past weekend he & his buddies fished the Rim Shoals Trophy area hard;

daylight to dark.

Jonathan caught & released this beauty on a rebel crawdad in the Rim Shoals Catch & Release. The hand held scale weighed

this brown at 11.5 lbs  29" long.  9/09

Some guys just know how to be a great dad.......and Erik Alford is one of those dads.  Erik brings his two children, Halle and Nate, to Rim Shoals often.  They take advantage of our natural resources each time they come.  If they're not fishing the White River, you will find them swimming in the Cotter Spring, hiking our local trails, or exploring Blanchard Springs Caverns.

Halle & Nate tell me they love spending time with their dad here.  And we all know, spending quality time with your kids is what it's all about.

Kudos to you Erik!!9/09

Recently, Halle 9 and her brother Nate 8 took a canoe trip with their dad on the White River.  Looks like Nate was doing a little softball warm-up on the gravel bar......or maybe his sister out-fished him that day?  I'll have to ask him next time he comes?9/09

For several years, Gary & I have tried for years to convince Rice Handley to come fish with Gary at Rim Shoals.  With Rice living in Mountain Home, you would think he would jump all over that offer.  Not exactly!  Rice & his wife Becky frequently enjoy bank fishing, but don't have a lot of experience fishing by boat.  Recently, they spent a morning on the water with Gary and were soon pros at it.  As usual, Becky caught the first, the largest & the most fish that morning.8/09

Saturday was a great on the White River for anyone who took advantage of it.  And these two girls were no  exception.

Micah and Shay enjoyed their day with Micah's dad, Mike on a float from Rim Shoals to Buffalo City.  School had already started for them in Oklahoma on Thursday, but they decided to take one last trip to the White before school was in full swing.  Micah is a frequent guest at Rim Shoals, but this time she left her brothers behind bringing her friend Shay.

Smiles sometimes tell it all!!8/09

With Bull Shoals getting ready for the habitat work to be begin, the Bull ran just enough water Saturday to limit the wading at Rim Shoals.  So Sam Ledbetter (above)  and his fishing pal Martin Maner stopped by to rent a boat.  They started out with the intentions of fishing just a couple of hours.  Well, those couple of hours soon turned into all afternoon.  Sam said the fishing was so good, they simply lost track of time and couldn't quit.  Sam shows off a couple of the browns they caught while fishing the Rim Shoals Catch & Release area. 8/09

Gary took a day off and fished Bull Shoals Dam with his friend Roger from Oklahoma.  Roger got to witness Gary's technique of "Zig-Zag" fishing.  The two spent the entire day slamming large rainbows, one after another. 07/09

Bryson King, 16, shows off his  nice brown he caught  at Rim Shoals.  His brother, Garrett, 12, displays their family's catch of the day.  While fishing with their parents, the boys caught 41 fish in one day, keeping only 13 to enjoy for dinner.  The two were having a great summer vacation, fishing, skiing & just enjoying the great outdoors! 07/09

Jeremiah Nixon, XII, (foreground at left) known simply as "Jere" follows in the footsteps of his father, Jay Nixon, and his grandfather, Jerry Nixon.

Jere is on summer break from Missouri University at Columbia MO where he is a second year, pre-law student. His father is the current Governor of Missouri and his grandfather is a St. Louis lawyer. Even more importantly, they are all dedicated trout anglers that we have had the privilege of serving at Rim Shoals.

Yeah, Jere has big shoes to fill. 07/09

Now That's What We Call a Rainbow Trout!!!

Cara Maxwell landed this beautiful

5.3 lbs rainbow while fishing with Hurst Fishing Service in Cotter.  Her guide, Curtis Redburn, was lending a hand with this big 'bow. 06/09

This group began their annual trout fishing trip about 12 years ago.  Starting out with 4, their "fishing club" has grown to 8-10 members.  These guys knew one another either in high school or at the University of Arkansas, and have remained friends for over 30 years.  Each year they look forward to their annual fishing trip.  Through the years, the wives have finally come to accept this fact and probably look as forward to it as they do.  Jack told me that Rim Shoals is the perfect place to catch fish & catch up with old friends.6/09

Last week we had the pleasure of having Dax Wurz, 13, from Sweeny, TX & his grandpa Rick Garriss from Baytown, TX spend several days with us at Rim Shoals.  Because of the extreme heat, they only fished early morning & late evening, but did very well.  According to Dax, the fish counter, they caught & released well over 200 fish by the time they went home.

Okay Dax, you now have proof for your friends!!! 06/09

When Davis Coleman was born, all of Gary's family knew this little guy had no choice but to become an avid outdoorsman.  Davis is the son of Gary's niece, Jennifer (Flippin) Coleman.  Her dad & mom, Tooter & Barbara Flippin, Gary's brother, had two daughters.  Well....the rest is history.  Davis loves to come stay with his grandparents and fish & hunt and fish & hunt and fish & hunt!

Davis & his dad caught this catfish on a trot line on Greer's Ferry Lake in early June.  They estimated the cat to weigh about 30-40 lbs.  Needless to say, Davis was really excited!06/09

I should also give credit to Adam Coleman, Davis' dad, who too,  is an excellent fisherman & hunter.  They too, spend a lot of time enjoying nature.  Here Davis & his dad are floating and of course, fishing Crooked Creek.

I'm sure Davis is looking forward to summer vacation again this year on the White River. 06/09

And you think your schedule is too busy to go fishing??

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon recently made time to fish with his best fishing partner, his dad, Jerry Nixon.  What better guide could the Nixon's have but our own Gary Flippin.  The trio enjoyed the afternoon fishing Jerry's favorite stretch of the White River, Rim Shoals.

Many people are aware of Governor Nixon's passion for fly fishing.  According to Jerry, Governor Nixon began fly fishing at the age 0f 5, fishing the state parks of Missouri.  He

continued fishing these parks until about 40 years ago when Jerry introduced him to the White River.  Governor Nixon still considers the White River to be the best trout fishery in this country.

With 50 years experience fishing this fly, Jerry will be the first tell you the .56r is the best fly from the Cotter to Buffalo City section of the White River.

This fly was developed by his brother, Tom Nixon around 1956.  Tom & Jerry spent 20 years improving the .56r by each standing on opposite sides of a run with different flies, counting the strikes.

Jerry's tip - it's important to use a sinking tip fly line & casts to create long drifts.  Now you know the Nixon secret.

What a great end to a perfect day......Jerry in the foreground bringing in a fish, while Jay's in the background landing his own.

Jerry sums it up "And this is the promise of many more days in the future."06/09

A few years ago Henry came to Gary & I with the idea of his "Fishing Buddy."  Unfamiliar with the concept, we cautiously agreed to let him give it a try.  Henry's idea soon became a very requested part of fishing Rim Shoals to many of Rim's first timer's!

Recently, Henry was Wanda Pohl's "fishing buddy" spending the better part of the day fishing the Rim Shoals area.  Wanda & her husband Chip, from Marietta, Georgia enjoyed several days fishing, canoeing, and sightseeing the Ozarks while staying at Rim Shoals Resort.

Here we see Wanda & Henry enjoying one of those  picture perfect days.05/09

Braving the elements, Joel & Donna Boone along with their friends Charlie & Candy Wilson spent yesterday fishing the White River.  For first time trout fishers, I would say they did pretty good.  Donna shows off her 19" brown, but Joel trumps her with his 26" brown.  Both were fishing with Carl Meeks.5/09
Through the heavy fog & rain Candy caught a beautiful 19" rainbow at Red Bud hole while fishing with Brad Morris.  And Charlie.........well he was simply enjoying a leisurely day on the river.  Couldn't play golf, so what could be better? 5/09

"I just wanted to say thank you again for the blessings. I had the best time this week. I've never caught so many fish in my life! I think I caught 40-50 fish on both Wednesday and Thursday afternoon and somewhere close to 100 on Friday. And that's not saying anything about the ones that got away! White woolly buggers were the hot ticket for me. I could strip 'em, drift 'em or drag 'em and catch fish! Green Midges and Copper Johns got me on some fish as well. Thanks again for every thing and rest assured I'll be returning to Rim Shoals as soon as I am able."                   Peace and Happy Fishing, Eric Wagner, St. Louis, Mo. 5/09

Chris Laird (right) and Andy Cook (below) just left after spending several days fishing the White River.  According to them, the fishing could not have been better.  In a 3-hour period on Wednesday, they caught & released around 100 trout.  What a day they said!  Then Tuesday afternoon it was time to fish for bigger fish.  And by the pictures, they met their goal.  Tuesday brought around 35 nice size trout.  Wednesday was yet again another successful day.  After catching & releasing about 75 trout, they called it quits.  But.....only for now.  They're hooked on the White River said they would be back!!05/09

Chris Brown is a regular at Rim Shoals Resort.  His gang hits this place with boats & rods in tow ready for a few days of fishing & hanging out.  Here is John Weinsinger of Van Buren showing off his nice brown he caught & released last weekend.  5/09

Rick Canada from Greenwood, AR caught this nice brown on the trip.  Apparently the fish got the last laugh as he swam away watching Rick trying to remove the barb he left behind in Rick's hand.  5/09

His first-time trip has left Dann Schwinger from Fort Smith hooked on fishing the White River.  He caught & released his brown just outside the catch & release area.  But the real surprise was landing the 4-lb spotted Kentucky bass.  I believe he'll be back!!! 5/09

David & his  son-in-law Jose Jimenezz enjoyed a great day on the Norfork with their guide Kevin Brantonies.  They spent the entire day fishing the Norfork landing several rainbows & browns.  Jose is pictured to the left holding one of his many rainbows.  David brought this one in while wading a shallow edge along the river. 04/09

Henry Seay with his "Fishing Buddy" David James enjoy a morning of instruction on the White River.  David and Henry fished together for several hours taking advantage of low water & warm temps.  As you can see, David apparently learned a lot from Henry on how to catch big fish......like the sculpin he hooked below! 04/09

Jennifer Blumthal, Paula's daughter held out for that final cast & boy did it pay off.  Fishing Jenkins Creek, she said fishing was really slow but she had to make one more cast.... And this is what she caught!!!!

Scott McKimmey caught & released his 24" brown in the early morning hours while the fog was still lifting.  He was fishing with a Super Rogue just above Crooked Creek.  Todd Warnecke from Dallas landed this beautiful 17" rainbow at Spout Springs on a brown trout Rapala.

Jack Gavin & his cousin John show off their browns caught & released while fishing the Rim Shoals area.  Both recently enjoyed their spring break as our guests.  Mrs. Gavin did a great job juggling their fishing & sporting addictions for the three enthusiasts.4/09

Tim Gavin had a good day while fishing Bull Shoals Dam by the looks of this rainbow.  He caught the brown in the Rim Shoals area.  This family has not let inclement weather & 9,000 cfs hinder their fishing trip.  Perhaps they'll give a few of us some lessons.4/09

Sometimes our guests say it best........"We had a great time again this year. Despite the high water (or maybe because of it), we caught the most browns we ever have and some good one's as well. Here are a couple of pictures of the fish. Vernon Itz is the guy in the first picture and Joe Paprocki is the guy in the other pictures. Thanks for another good trip. Can't wait to get back."04/09

Each year Rim Shoals braces its' banks for the "Rim Shoals Man Camp" outing.  And once again they return with fly rods in hand ready to fish, eat, and tell stories by the campfire.  But  the leaders of the pack, Bill Howard & Jim Holman were noticeably missed. 3/09

So Jim..........
take care of Bill..........

And Bill here are the boys giving you a
Rim Shoals Man Camp White Bread Toast!!

Jon and his son Kevin show off the awesome brown Kevin caught while fishing Dry Run. I'll bet dad wishes he was 15 again???  Jon sums up the weekend..."The creek was high and muddy, but perseverance finally paid off! Thanks for a great weekend, see you next year."

The Bogert boys were fishing machines last weekend.  They fished the White River with guides then off to Dry Run Creek.  Michael Bogert landed this large rainbow at Dry Run while fishing with his dad Bill & cousin Kevin.  This is one rainbow Michael won't forget!!

Kittena and Ronny Bell, frequent visitors at Rim Shoals, recently enjoyed a day of perfect weather while fishing the White River.  This rainbow was just one of the many trout they caught while fishing the Rim Shoals area. 3/09

Friday the 13th certainly brought no bad luck to this fisherman.  Terry Terrill from Kansas City landed this monster as it boiled out of the water snatching his #14 Caddis in mid-air.  He was wading the shoals at Rim when he caught this trophy.  3/09

Brothers, Pete & Greg Maul show off their nice trout after spending a day fishing near the Bull Shoals Dam.  These two guys pack in for about a week of fishing twice a year.  From daylight to dark, in any kind of weather, you may find them just about any place the fish are hot!  This year they found Rim Shoals and Bull Shoals Dam to be the best spots. 3/09
Crofton Sloan & his sons enjoyed spring break this year fishing the White River for several days.  Pictured to the left is Shipman Sloan with his brown he landed on the Rim Shoals rubber band midge.  Spencer Sloan caught & released his brown on a black & silver rapala.  3/09
Francis Scheuerman landed this awesome brown at the second island on a San Juan worm!  On the right is Christopher Scheuerman showing off his healthy brown.  The boys introduced their dad to Rim Shoals this trip.3/09

Henry enjoys a warm winter day with a fishing buddy at Dry Run Creek

Matt Jeppson had a very productive weekend, 12/19 & 20 here at Rim Shoals. "Some real beauts from this outing, midges were productive and I took lots on streamers, fishing deeper holes/runs at night, one of them was probably the heaviest trout I've ever taken."

Josh Bailey and Luke Parsons, out of Fayetteville, AR  heard the river was finally low and chose the White River over Colorado for their Christmas trip. They spent half a day fishing with Gary and have waded the lower islands, as well. They said they landed at least 60 fish and missed twice as many during their 6 hour float trip.

Kenny, my Bro, and I just had to have a river fix and mad dashed it from Tulsa for the day. Saturday (12/20) turned out to be a great day for fishing, nothing extremely large, two break-offs, but the numbers were over 100 for Kenny & I for the day. We hit it hard from Ranchette to the power lines and back taking out after dark. Do not recommend that in “low” water, but life is good. Thanks for the suggestion on Saturday, Gary. We hit pockets and just hammered them. The weather wasn’t bad, did get a little chill @ 4pm with the wind. Our primary baits were countdowns, spoons & zigjigs, boated @12 browns, one Brook and the rest bows. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas, hope to see you soon, thanks for being our friends.

Dave and Jay Osborn had the resort to themselves for the past few days. They did check out early due to weather issues, but after catching 126 fish, they didn't feel like they were missing out on anything. Here are a couple of snaps from their visit.
Above are just a few of the photos Ed Beck and I took while at Rim Shoals this past weekend.  (12/08)

Bridget actually touches a fish...

Rusty caught this beauty near Roundhouse Shoals

After fishing with egg patterns for about two hours, Jennifer (Paula's daughter) had landed 9 fish. She decided to round out the number before calling it a day. This was her last catch, a perfect ten. (11/08)

At right, Tom Roberts uses the one-handed technique to snap a picture of this nice brown caught on a sowscud. (11/08)

I stayed at Rim Shoals 11/15/08, with the Hnedak-Bobo group.  The fly used to catch this 30” brown was one Gary tied. A pink and white egg pattern with a large golden domed head.  We fished above the handicap access on the North Fork.   Had a great weekend.

Rainbow trout are a great sporting fish.
But when it comes to good eating, many prefer crappie.
Chris Heard found himself a little honey hole near Crooked Creek. He shows off his 16" monster.

Getting a good picture can be the trickiest part of the business.

Waders, boots and lots of tackle sun-dry after a morning dip.

What do a rescue helicopter and emergency personnel have to do with these three men? We are happy to say, very little. But it was a close call today for Tim, Don and Steve and these folks were all here to help.

Rim Shoals employee, Stacey, was walking between cabins and heard yells for help. She came dashing into to the office and called 911. "There are men floating in the river!" she yelled into the phone.

Our three guests had been drifting up river and simply misjudged the speed of the current. They were pushed into a tree before getting the motor started, and all were dumped into the river. Fortunately, Gary was nearby and able to get to Tim and Don before it was too late. We are also pleased to say that the initial 911 response was less than 10 minutes.

A great day at Rim for Garry Marshall
and his two friends, as they hooked and landed some 40 fish during the day fishing with me, including this fine fat Bow.

Here is the 24” - 5lb Brown I caught Friday (10/24) at Rim Shoals.

I caught him just up stream from the catch & release sign
on a #7 Rapala Countdown.

See you in January!

Chris Brown

Chad Hayes with an estimated 9 lb brown, fishing with guide Clint Wilkinson 10/08

Guided by Joe Salisbury, John Chapman caught a 19" rainbow and Owen Miller caught a 21" male brown at Rim Shoals.
These gents were fishing  with pink San Juan Worms. 10/08

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has the awesome responsibility to manage and maintain fish populations in most of Arkansas' waters.  One of the most visible activities is the stocking of fish. Kent Coffey mans the stocking raft and floats the White and North Fork Rivers on a regular schedule. Here are pics of a recent trip from the Rim Shoals access to the Shipps Ferry access.

The stocking raft, equipped with a motor, has a net framed between two large pontoons.

Kent meets hatchery trucks at public accesses along his route to refill his net.

Trout of various size squirm for position.

Kent controls the opening of a trap door in the net to let trout filter out as he drifts downriver.

Steve Saitta, Columbia, MO. His Labor Day week-end proved quite fruitful. He's showing off this football shaped rainbow caught while wade fishing Saturday. He was midge fishing near our dock/pavilion. (9/08)

Steve Harrison, fishing with Davy Wotton, caught this 22" Bow along with a bunch of other fine fish Saturday (8/30). This fish was in the 3.8 to 4lb weight class.

Paula Turner caught and released this trophy  brown just below the power lines. She was fishing with a Rebel crawdad pattern. (8/08)

The look of concentration, at left, is a telltale sign of a true fisherman.  The fact that we didn't get a pic of the fish may give insight into the actual skills of this angler.

Kelly Kennedy and son Charlie motored out to the second island with Henry to do a little wading with their fly rods.
Their options were very limited in 8+ units, but they still caught fish.

Early morning sight from the porch of Camper Cabin #1
Calum Fletcher. 7/08

Can't wait for dinner time!

It's not the first time Steve Wilde has teamed up with guide, Randy Tolliver and snagged a big brown.
Steve said this brown, at 23", was bigger than the one he caught last year,
and he's eager to return to beat his personal best again next year.

This nice 7 lb. brown was caught by Tim Brown of Blue Springs, MO with a Rapala Countdown below the power line Friday, 7/11.

Ron and Susan Haines visited in July. Henry helped Susan brush up on her casting skills and then took them both out to the second island for a little wading in 8 units.

John Turner picked up a 21 inch brownie that weighed in
at 3 lbs. 8 ozs. 7/08

His wife Maria caught a nice rainbow, 15 inches, 1 lb. 8ozs.

The guy with the two big browns is Kevin Morse from the Oklahoma City area. 7/08

Emily Schletzbaum out-fished both Grandpa and Dad last weekend.

At right: Michael Easter snags a nice brown, July 4th.

White River, A Fishing Grab Bag

We had a few folks hit the water yesterday as news of lower generation spread around. This white bass was caught near our pavilion.

More than water had come through Bull Shoals flood gates. You're not dreaming if you think you see a walleye or garfish swimming by.

But, we were surprised to see this guy at our place 25 miles from the dam.

There was the terrible flooding in March when our pavilion sat in 3 feet of water. 5
As the storm waters receded, we knew we had been incredibly lucky compared to property owners further down river and on the North Fork.

But then the lake levels within the whole White River system began to rise. Flood gates were opened and 10 units of rushing water became a familiar sight for us. (The upside was the rare opportunity to see our man-made waterfall. )

Another rain and the already swollen lakes were pushed to their limits. The flood gates at Bull Shoals were reopened on April 24th, giving us 13 units of water running around the clock.

The flood gates have been closed as of 4/29. Barring heavy rains we should see 8 units until mid-May and then are hopeful for a pattern that allows some wade fishing part of the day.

Updated 4/28/08.
